We’ve talked about where the idea came from but we’re not really too sure.  There have been books read and movies watched but at some point it just became something that was going to happen.  We started dreaming in early 2009 but didn’t really start planning until maybe August, currently it’s 2 weeks before we fly to Beijing and it seems like the last 6 months have disappeared too fast.

So what’s the plan?  Well basically we want to ride (bicycles) from Beijing to Paris.  We have a loose plan of where we’re heading but this might change depending on all sorts of things along the way.

The basic plan is to ride west from Beijing, head toward Kazahkastan, then head south to Iran, around the bottom of the Caspian across to Turkey, then up to Eastern Europe and through to France.  Sounds straight forward enough!!

We’ve got enough gear with us to be pretty self sufficient, we really only need to pick up food and water along the way and we should be pretty happy.

Here is a rough map of the rough plan:-)

Lake Beihuoluxun looks like an interesting place to stop for a picnic. It appears that they have been doing a lot of nuclear testing in this area.

Best of luck for you both.

Hi guys hope all is going well.

There has been a 6.9 magnitude earthquake in Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu, Qinghai Province. So there’s a big rescue effort on. Don’t know if you heading that way or not, but if you are – a heads up. If you would like I can keep an eye on the news and pass on any thing that might upon impact you.

See a guy in the USA is under arrest for assault and battery with a snake. was only a little 1.2m python. And 2 brothers in India are under arrest for attempted murder for dumping 500 venomous snakes in some jokers house. No body was bitten. Apparently was a feud.

Back home not much has changed apart it’s a bit colder. Apparently Dan Carter won’t make the reshuffled Crusaders and Richie McCaw is back as captain.

    Take care,

    Paul

Cheers for the heads up man!!
Been watching the news and spent a few hours on the net making new plans, no Kyrgyzstan or Pakistan for us:( But hey, lucky we weren’t there now!! Really have to feel for the Uzbeks being driven out, but as with all these things I don’t know the whole story so hard to take sides.

Mike i remember hearing of this trip at whilst chatting to you at Christchurch airport some time ago. I guess some of those networking skills have paid off.
Hope you don’t mind, i am using your map data to show my Network Fundamentals class the extent of our connected world.
Are you guys Skyping etc? We could get you hooked up with one of the classes :-)

    cheers
